Sorrow, Anger, Depression – Whatever you’re going through, There’s A Psalm For That!

The truth is that we are broken and messy in just about every way; but we don’t have to just cover up the flaws. We have such an incredible resource in Psalms on how to walk through your emotions in a healthy, God honoring way.

Anger

As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them! Let burning coals fall upon them! Let them be cast into fire, into miry pits, no more to rise! I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy. Psalm 140:9-12

There’s nothing like burning coals and miry pits to exact revenge on your enemies! No one can say this psalm isn’t full of vengeance and wrath. It’s ok to be angry, but the verses go on to give an excellent template on how to handle your anger: I know that the Lord will maintain the cause. At the end of the day, your anger is often a result of frustration that you can’t do anything about the situation, or you were wronged or treated unjustly. But you have access to the Creator, the final Judge. Trust in His sovereignty.

Fear

Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. Let not the flood sweep over me, the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me. Psalm 69:14-15

The wording in this Psalm is so raw and paints a vivd portrait of the author’s heart. It doesn’t say, “Dear Lord, please look my way and help me out if you find the time.” It says very boldly, “Deliver me!” They knew they were in trouble, and cried out to the one and only person who had the power to save them: God Himself.
