The 6 Pieces of the Armor of God

The armor of God is a detailed and intricate metaphor for the Christian life. Do you know all the pieces, and how significant their specific uses are?

The Breastplate of Righteousness

The Roman breastplate was a fitted piece of armor, constructed in segments to cover back, front and shoulders. Not only did it protect vital organs, but it was relatively light compared to poorly refined iron and effective compared to leather hides. Christ’s righteousness is an easy yoke and light burden, and Paul writes elsewhere that we clothe ourselves with Christ.

Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

Legionnaire’s sandals shoes were in fact sandals, but they weren’t just designed for walking around. Tightly bound to the calves, ankles and feet, they provided a firm foundation for soldierly duties. The soles had to be durable to march long distances (they didn’t have cars). If we stand firm in the good news of Christ, we bring peace, and it is this good news that anchors us against the assaults of the world!
