Fooled Me! These 6 Phrases Aren’t ACTUALLY in the Bible

Modern wisdom is often attributed to the Bible that so heavily influenced our culture. But these six familiar phrases never actually appear in Scripture!

God works in mysterious ways.

There are several Scripture passages that remind us how far beyond us God is, that we cannot understand him: Deuteronomy 29:29, Ecclesiastes 3:11 and the entire ending of Job come to mind. But the actual phrase “God works in mysterious ways” never once appears in the Bible! English poet William Cowper is actually responsible for our familiarity. Admired for his hymns as much as his poetry, Cowper wrote in “Light Shining out of the Darkness” that “God moves in a mysterious way / His wonders to perform.”

The lion shall lie down with the lamb.

This line is popularly quoted, it even inspires art and decorations, but the lion and lamb never actually lie down together in the Bible. In the writings of Isaiah, the lamb lies down with the wolf (Isaiah 65:25), and the lion either chews straw with the ox or lies down with the fatted calf (Isaiah 11:6), but never do the lion and lamb hookup.
