Fooled Me! These 6 Phrases Aren’t ACTUALLY in the Bible

Modern wisdom is often attributed to the Bible that so heavily influenced our culture. But these six familiar phrases never actually appear in Scripture!

Money is the root of all evil.

How many times have you been told that money doesn’t grow on trees? If money were the root of something, how cool would that be? Well, except for evil. Despite the common aphorism, money is not actually the root of all evil! Both Paul (1 Timothy 6:10) and Nehemiah (Nehemiah 5:9-11) actually write that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, but not evil in general, and certainly not money alone.

Charity begins at home.

Jesus actually called us to radically give: literally go the extra mile, take the cloak off our back and also our shirt, to provide for another. In fact, the origination of the phrase is from an English physician who was actually arguing against such a mentality. Quoth Sir Thomas Browne: “Charity begins at home, is the voice of the world; yet is every man his greatest enemy, and, as it were, his own executioner.”
