The 7 I AM Statements of Jesus

Some think Jesus never claimed to God, that perhaps this was an invention by early Christians or misreading Paul. The seven I AM statements of Jesus offer the truth of Jesus’ identity.

The Way, the Truth and the Life

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” —John 14:6

In a world where religion says all sorts of things – meditate, let go of desire; fast during Ramadan; keep the entirety of Old Testament Law – are ways to reach God, Jesus puts in sharp contrast His freedom, and His exclusion. It is not works, but Jesus Himself who is all truth, and the only way to God, while being eternal life itself.

The True Vine

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.” —John 15:1

Like claiming to be life multiple times, Jesus links people to Himself by saying others receive their nourishment and life by being branches of Him. This makes Christ the focal point, and not our own works can cause us to bear fruit – save that we receive from Him all things.

“But who do you say that I am?” —Matthew 16:15
