Three Ways to Make Sense Out of the World

Christians can often find meaning and value, even in the face of life’s difficulties in three distinct and powerful ways.

The third means for making sense out of the suffering world is Love. It is in loving as Jesus loved that the core meaning of life becomes tangible, visible and effective. Love is the meaning of life. Where there is love there is life abundant. It is love that is the greatest of these three ways to make sense out of the world. It is love that brought meaning back into the world in the life of Jesus. It was out of love that God created the world. It is out of love that God sent his only Son to suffer, to die on the Cross, and to redeem the world. It is this love that remains with us in the midst of the difficulties of the world in the presence of the Holy Spirit. Love, then, is the ultimate source of life. It is out of love that the healing of forgiveness arises. “God is love and whoever lives in love lives in God and God lives in him.” (1John 4:16) This is the very core of meaning in this world. Love is the only one of these three means to make sense out of the world that is eternal. When we are, finally, face to face with God in Heaven, we will no longer need faith, or hope. We will simply, and beautifully, live forever in love with God who is Love.

Now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. Now, faith, hope, and love abide, but the greatest of these is love. – 1 Corinthians 13:13
