The 6 Pieces of the Armor of God

The armor of God is a detailed and intricate metaphor for the Christian life. Do you know all the pieces, and how significant their specific uses are?

The Sword of Truth

Though we know legionnaires carried lances and could be backed by archers, the only weapon Paul grants in the armor of God is the sword. Unlike the lance, which had to be carried in one hand and constantly displayed, the sword was sheathed and hung from the belt. Held in one hand opposite the shield, the Word is what we use to “take all things captive for Christ,” which is fitting as Jesus Himself is the “Word made flesh.” When we need to fight, mount an attack on the darkness of this world and in our lives, our only weapon is Jesus, who already did the work, in Whom we have the victory.
