Across the country, cities will be celebrating the 4th of July with fireworks. But who puts on the best show?

On July 4th, 1777, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania became the first American city to celebrate the declaration of its independence with fireworks. According to Slate, of the fireworks display, the Pennsylvania Evening Post wrote that, “‘The evening was closed with the ring of bells, and at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.’”
