Eating Humble Pie

Pride certainly comes before the fall. See how God sends us little corrections when our head gets too big.

A very close friend of mine recently reminded me of something very important.  That we must remain humble and give glory to God in all circumstances.  When I fail to do this, God will send something my way to remind me of this.  Pride always comes just before a fall.

Paul was given a thorn in the flesh, King Saul’s pride caused his downfall, Lucifer (the Devil) was cast down from heaven due to his overestimation of himself, God humbled David when he counted his army, Peter heard the cock crow three times to remind him of his boasting to Christ.  The list goes on.  When someone mentioned to me that I had a great sermon one day I told them that this is why we had double doors installed in the front entrance of the church…so I could fit my swelled head through it.

We are most susceptible to pride when we have success.  This may be why God sends us trials and tests.  To keep our eyes on Him, off of ourselves, and be dependent upon God in all circumstances.  Why should I ever boast except in my Savior?  What do I have that I did not receive? Every time I start to think highly of myself, He humbles me.  A slice of humble pie is good for the soul because God resists the proud but He gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).

For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?  First Corinthians 4:7 (NIV)
