Treasures in Heaven

You can’t take your wealth with you, but you can build up riches in heaven before you get there!

Maybe you’ve heard the joke about a man asking God how much a second is in heaven and God tells him its a thousand years. Then the man asks God how much a penny is worth in heaven. God tells him a million dollars. Then the man asks God to send him a penny from heaven and God says, “Just a second.”

When we are giving to the Kingdom, we are storing up treasure in heaven. When one the richest men ever to live died they asked, “How much money did John D. Rockefeller leave behind?” The answer was, “All of it!” You will never see a U-Haul following a hearse. Since you can’t take it with you, why not send it ahead?

Giving offerings in church is only one way that you can accumulate treasures in heaven. You can donate your time, your talents, and your words. Money is only one of many ways to store up treasures in heaven. During one witnessing afternoon where it was around 100 degrees, I had someone give me a cold drink of water. At the time, this person did not receive the gospel message that I offered but they did offer me a cold bottle of water. It made me think of Jesus’ saying that, “anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward” (Mark 9:41). I reminded this person of that Scripture. Only God knows if they later placed their trust in Christ.

The good thing about riches in heaven is that they don’t depreciate in value, there is no penalty for early withdrawal, no moth or rust can touch it, and it’s safely and securely insured by God Himself. Those who have a lot of wealth constantly worry about it, so Jesus reminded us to “not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matt 6:19-20). Wherever your heart is, there is where your money goes.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also ~ Matt 6:20
