Like a Bolt of Lightning

We never know when our time will come. So we must be prepared and spread the Good News to others so they are prepared too!

One day as my son and I were hiking through the canyons of Colorado, near Canyon City a few years ago, when we heard a loud crack and then boom!  We smelled something like ionized air and the hair on our forearms stood straight up.  We finally realized that it was dry lightning.  This is a rare event where lightening can strike even in the absence of clouds.  We did not expect that.  We could have easily been killed but I see now that it was not our time.

Life is very much like that.  Things can hit us like a bolt out of the blue.  Just last week a new co-worker had just began his job training and I went over to introduce myself to him.  I handed him a Bible tract to share the gospel as he told me that he was not a Christian.  A few days later he was gone!  I mean as in not living.  It really stunned me because I handed him a Bible tract just days before and it really waylaid me. Wow…what if I had not introduced myself to him that day?  What if he read the Bible tract that night or the next and decided to place his trust in Jesus Christ to save him?  Isn’t that just like the Holy Spirit?  To prompt us to do something because normally when I share the gospel I say something like, “If you were to die tonight or tomorrow, do you know where you would go?”  I usually don’t think that it’s literally possible…but truly it is!  Today I am wondering if this man is in heaven or is in hell.  Isn’t that just like our God to give a person one last chance to come to saving faith?  I’ll never know until I get to the Kingdom of Heaven…but it was absolutely worth sharing the gospel because we really don’t know what the future holds.  Tomorrow is no guarantee.  That’s why I tell some who puts it off; there are no guarantees, so today may be your last chance.  And this is why I have memorized certain Scriptures like 2 Corinthians 6:2, “For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”

Save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh. – Jude 1:23 (ESV)
