What’s the first thought in your mind when the alarm clock goes off? How about while you’re running errands, responding to work emails, or corraling the kids? What’s the last thought in your mind when your head hits the pillow?

For many of us, the busyness and stress of life have overwhelmed our thoughts from sunup to sundown. Oftentimes, my first thought in the morning is going over everything on my to-do list for the day, and then inevitably reaching for my phone to add that one thing a forgot to get done yesterday.

At the end of the day, I’m not much better. It’s more of the same – running through the things I did, feeling like it wasn’t enough, debating whether I should stay up late and get things done or try to tack it on to what I have to get done the next day.

If this sounds familiar, you are certainly not alone! Many of us feel like we’re working ourselves to the bone, whether it be at a job or in our personal lives, and for what? When we can’t see progress, we lose motivation to keep going. So, what’s the point of it all? What are we striving for?

Brent Shows, founder of Team 431, has a few wise words on the topic of purpose. He tells us that many of us are living for the world, but our souls long for heaven.

This may seem like a simple statement on the surface, but the truth of it is grounded in scripture. Romans 8:22-25 says:

For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

This verse may seem a little convoluted, but its’ essentially saying if we’re discontent with the world, then we’re on the right track! Once we’ve tasted true freedom and love only found in Christ, it makes it more difficult to step back into the world and deal with sins, frustrations, and tragedies.
