Anonymous Gift

Someone recently placed a winning $80,000 lottery ticket in a Columbus, GA church’s collection plate. The gift was given anonymously and no one has come forward to take credit.

Be careful not to do your `acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

– Mathew 6: 1-4

Someone recently placed a winning $80,000 lottery ticket in a Columbus, GA church’s collection plate.  The gift was given anonymously and no one has come forward to take credit.  The church, which had been burglarized just three weeks prior, is able to use this donation to repair the damage caused by the thieves. The Lord provides.

This is the kind of gift we should all aspire to give.  Again and again the Bible tells us to give generously and to help the needy.  But Jesus also counsels us not to flaunt our charitable giving.  Think about who could use a helping hand in your community and give generously.  Just remember, your reward will come from the Father…
