“That’s the most difficult thing to deal with: realizing that there are times when your life isn’t in your hands.” So says Michelle, a resident at Los Angeles’ Union Rescue Mission. Her family of seven fled home with their single mom, and joined hundreds of others in the Skid Row neighborhood. So in this worst part of the city, against all odds, how is it that Michelle keeps her hopes up? She says she’ll be back at Union Rescue some day – to serve rather than be served.
