#3 Rembrandt’s The Storm on the Sea of Galilee

Dutch master Rembrandt von Rijn was commissioned by Catholics and Protestants alike in his time, and a great deal of his biblical work focuses on Jesus’ life and parables. However, the only seascape he ever painted was this miracle from the fourth chapter of Mark’s gospel in which Christ calms a storm. In a letter to a contemporary, Rembrandt stated his goal with art was to create the greatest and most natural movment – the splash of water, spray of foam and wind in the sails certainly help in this image. The picture was stolen from a museum in Boston in 1990 and has never been recovered.
