10 Bible Verses To Read Before Bed

Restless? Anxious? Racing thoughts? Rest in the truth of Scripture!

If you struggle to get to sleep at night, you’re certainly not alone. According to sleephealth.org, “More than 50 million Americans already suffer from over 80 different sleep disorders and another 20 to 30 million suffer intermittent sleep problems each year.” That’s a whole heck of a lot of people struggling with something that should come naturally.

Whether you have a sleep disorder or not, everyone experiences restless nights or seasons of stress that keep you awake at night. Maybe you get anxious thoughts when your head hits the pillow and start going over all the mistakes you made throughout the day. Some people have the opposite problem, where they sleep ten or twelve hours a day and still wake up feeling drowsy.

The good news is, we always have hope. On the lonely nights, we have Jesus. On the anxious nights, we have Jesus. When we can’t imagine getting out of bed in the morning, we always have Jesus. And how do we fellowship with our Lord? By reading and meditating on His Word and taking time to pray. God certainly speaks to us in all sorts of ways, from music to wise council and everything in between. However, the real power is found in scripture. It’s God’s love letter to us, after all.

I’m certainly not discouraging anyone from taking medication if they have a sleep disorder, but it couldn’t hurt either way to take a few minutes at the end of your day to read these verses. These words aren’t necessarily going to instantly cure you of insomnia, but they absolutely can put you in a better frame of mind. Just imagine if the last five minutes of your day was spent focusing on one verse. Not only would your racing thoughts have something to focus on, but your heart would be filled up with truth right before you lay down for the night.

With that thought, let’s dive right into some verses to get you started. You can choose to focus on just one or take on all 10. There’s no wrong way to spend time with God, you just have to show up with a soft heart, ready to receive His word.

When you’re feeling anxious…

Proverbs 3:24 – When you lie down, you will not be afraid, when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

John 14:27 – Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

2 Timothy 1:7 – For God’s not given me a spirit of fear, but a spirit of love, and of power, and a sound mind, to live each day and glorify his name.

Psalm 4:8 – I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O Lord make me dwell in safety.

When you’re weary…

Mattew 11:28-30 – Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Exodus 33:4 – And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

Psalm 116:7 – Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

God’s promises for safety and rest:

Psalm 91:1,5,11 – Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

Psalm 4:8 – I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the LORD was watching over me.
