The Monastery

Dan Doyle’s moving poem about the need for a return to truth and humbleness.

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. – John 16:13

Below is Dan Doyle’s moving poem about the need for a return to truth and humbleness. Read through and see how necessary God’s truth is among the chaos of today. Enjoy, and may God’s grace be upon you!

St. Michael’s Rock,

holy-headed isle,

God-scented peak

in the Atlantic waves.

Monk-manned citadel

prayer-bolstered promontory,

stone-drubbed monastery,

You sleep in silence now.

The hours are no longer chanted

in your rock hewn church.

the brothers have all gone to dust.

Only wind and gannets

know your quiet peace now.

Rabbits forage your gardens

and only ruins remember

your heroic lives.

You holy men,

mad with God-love

who saved the world

with your mighty prayers

and your goose quill pens

are needed once again.

The world has gone wild

with barbarous fury

and sinks under the

terrifying weight of ego.
