Christians Have A Shield That Cannot Be Destroyed… But What’s It Made Of?

There is much to fear in this life. There are dangers that are real from both outside and within. But as Christians, we know that we are never alone.

“But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain.” Psalm 3:3-4

There is much to fear in this life. There are dangers that are real from both outside and within. But as Christians, we know that we are never alone. We have a shield around us that cannot be destroyed. It is a shield made of omnipotent love. It is God in all of his glory.

It is a great comfort to know that we have such a protector. It is because of his loving protection that we can confidently lift up our heads and carry on in the long pilgrimage through this Vanity Fair, toward his holy mountain. He watches over us at all times. “See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands…” (Isaiah 49:16) In faith, then, we can be confident in all that we do in his name. It is because of this that we can lift our heads high knowing that he is with us, that he will protect us and strengthen us in the difficult times.

In the difficult times we can call out to the Lord and trust that he will listen. He will not just listen, but he will answer our greatest needs. We know that the Lord knows all things. His wisdom and understanding far surpasses our own. His answers may often seem inscrutable to us. They may not be what we had imagined. But in faithful humility, we know that his answers are always best, for he sees more perfectly what is best for us.

This passage models the humble faith that brings us the peace that our hearts so dearly desire. God made us to live actively in accord to his commands. Our faith is not a passive thing. He wants us to live purposeful and meaningful lives. He has given us both free will and the ability to come to know him. When in the light and the knowledge of faith, and out of our growing love for God, we willingly choose to live our lives in accord with his commandments, we can know that we will have his protection in all things. He will be our faithful shield. He will surround us with his glory. He will never abandon us, or leave us alone.

Lord, you are our shield. Help us to know this more every day. It is in loving you and in our humble obedience to your commands that our lives find their truest purpose and meaning. Strengthen us with your grace, Lord. We pray in Jesus’ name.
