There’s an old children’s rhyme, meant as encouragement, that says “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” It’s the type of thing we’ve all heard; it may even be advice we’ve given to others – but it’s something we also know is completely false. Call a beautiful person ugly or the strongest man pathetic, and just see how much power your tongue holds. So when we communicate, speak love and truth, or even ask for help, might the way we ask be better?
