At the Union Mission shelter in Norfolk, Virginia, Neal Shytles points to an uncomfortable lower bunk. “This is bed 13,” he says. “This is where I lived for a year.” Everyday, he says, he feels lonely; despite being surrounded both on the street and in the shelter, he doesn’t have a family locally to take him in. All he wants for Thanksgiving is a family.
