How Can We Be Joyful In Everything We Do?

Sometimes it is the simple things that give us the greatest joy. Have you ever noticed how cheerful persons bring sunshine into every situation. Maybe it is their natural optimism, or their innocent sense of wonder and curiosity in all things that gives them this lively attitude. But those who are cheerful in the Lord, bring an irrepressible joy, unlike any other, to everything they do. For those who are bent under life’s burdens, the cheerful presence of another often helps them know that they are not alone and that cheerful look gives them hope. God wants us to bring this cheerfulness, that finds its genesis in his love, to everything we do as Christian believers.

“…good news gives health to the bones.” Don’t we Christians have good news to share? Is it not the best news ever? The Good News of Jesus Christ is the source of all that is healthy for our bones, as well as for our hearts, our minds, and our souls. The Gospels are the evidence of God’s love for us and for all of his creation. Because of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, we are no longer slaves to sin and death. We have experienced the depth of God’s love for us in Jesus. We have encountered an eternal love, a forgiving, a life-giving love, personally. Because we have experienced being forgiven, our hearts can be full of cheer. It is this cheerful joy that we are to bring with us in all that we do. And the world really needs to see this cheer in us. It really is our mission to bring this joy to the hearts of those who are burdened, to those who have not yet encountered the love of God in their lives.

But we know ourselves too. We know that there are times when life throws us for a loop and we lose our balance. We are not immune to bouts of depression, or even despair at times. But we always have someone to turn to in whose face we always see that cheerful look that brings joy back into our hearts. When we are in those hard moments, in those dark valleys, let us turn our eyes back into the face of Jesus, for he will always be there with a cheerful look that will fill our hearts with joy. As Christians we are to be this source of joy for one another. When we see those who are bent under the weight of their own sorrows, burdened by the losses that come to a life unexpected and often undeserved, we are to be Gospel people, that is “Good News” people for them. We are called by God to be the ones who give that cheerful look that brings joy back into their hearts.
