Funny Prayer About Getting Old

Mary Maxwell delivers a hilarious speech about the adventures of getting older!

Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. Isaiah 46:4

Old age and a sense of humor. It might not seem that these two things don’t naturally go together, but I think they are the very sign of both a healthy life well lived, and a true understanding of life that comes from a profound relationship with God.

This video was recorded at a fund raising event for a group associated with a church oriented charity. A senior citizen is introduced to say grace before the meal begins. She is a little bent by her age, and her voice is just a little shaky, but she prays a fine, simple grace, then looks as though she is going to sit down, but turns quickly back to the podium. Then the fun begins. She says, “Oh, I forgot…” and she continues her “prayer”.

Enjoy this fun video and take time to reflect on the mystery of life. Life truly is a gift from God. In faith, then, love the gift of it, make the best out of the good times, and the troubling times. This will be more possible if one deepens one’s relationship with God, the one who inspires all of life, every moment, every place, and every person. If one does this, one will be given the grace to enjoy life. One of God’s greatest gifts is a sense of humor. With humor we can confront all of the stages of life with a sense of wonder and joy. Thanks be to God.

In times past, and not that far past, old age was honored and deep respect was given to the old for their wisdom about life and its lessons. People used to go to the old ones to get the knowledge they needed to confront the difficult challenges of life. The old understood their role in society. They had lived and learned from their mistakes. They had the time to contemplate life’s ups and downs and understood things more deeply and clearly than the young who were caught up in the middle of life’s intensity.

What Does God Say About Old Age?

Wisdom is with the aged, with long life is understanding. Job 12:12

Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer being is decaying, yet our inner being is renewed day by day. 2 Corinthians 4:16

A gray head is a crown of glory; It is found in the way of righteousness. Proverbs 16:31

They will still yield fruit in old age; They shall be full of sap and very green. Psalm 92:14

With a long life I will satisfy him, and let him behold My salvation. Psalm 91:16
