The Reality Is That We Are All Lost And Blind. Jesus Is Our Guide!

It is when we are suddenly brought up short in the recognition that we are lost, that we realize our desperate need for a guide. And we have a Guide who is and will always be true.

What is it that makes us blind? We are blinded by our sins and the motivations behind them. It is our submission to our passions, our readiness to follow the false promises of immediate gratification that blinds us, that causes us to lose our way. Pride, greed, anger, jealousy, lust, gluttony and sloth make us blind to all that is light and all that is good, true, and beautiful.

Because we are often blinded by temptations of various kinds, we lose our way. It is when we are suddenly brought up short in the recognition that we are lost, that we realize our desperate need for a guide. And we have a Guide who is and will always be true. The reality we all must come to grips with is that, in order to find our way back to the narrow path that leads to the happiness our souls desire, we must humbly bend our wills to the perfect will of our Guide. It is he alone who can lead us home. We must submit to his guidance willingly, without qualifications. This is very difficult and such a thing cannot be undertaken by a wilfully blind soul.

The first step, of course, is to admit to one’s blindness. Some come to this realization relatively easily, by the grace of God. Others come to it the hard way, through the crucible of unforgiving experience. Again, by the grace of God, they may finally come to see the error of their ways and repent. These have reason for hope. Still others will come to know their blindness, but will stubbornly and arrogantly cling to the false idea that they will bend to no other authority than their own, even if they are wrong. These, sadly, and ironically, doom themselves. They can look forward only to despair.

But in faith, we know we have a Guide whose love is unconditional, whose kindness and mercy are unbounding, and whose patience is ever enduring. Though we wilfully turn away from him at times and get lost in the darkness of sin and error, he will never turn away from us. When we realize that we are lost and cry out in our need, he will swiftly, and without hesitation, be at our side. He will light the way before us. He will show us ways we have never known. And he will remain with us along the way. If we turn to him when we find the road is rough and the journey difficult, he will walk with us to smooth our way. If we humbly turn to him, he will not fail to guide us back to the narrow path of righteousness.

Lord, you are the dawn from on high that shines on those who are lost in darkness and the shadow of death. You are the One who guides our feet into the way of peace. Give us the grace of humility so that we may know our need and accept your aid. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!
