5 Simple Things To Do In 2016 To Be More Joyful

It’s that time again; we reminisce on things that have passed, and look ahead for what’s to come. Each year we vow to finally clean out the basement, or lose that extra ten pounds for good. This year, we promise ourselves, will be OUR year.

2. Don’t Commit to things you can’t do

This one will be difficult for me. I am a huge people pleaser. Anytime anyone asks anything of me, my default is, “Yes, of course, I will get to it as soon as I can.” This last year that lead me to volunteering for several huge tasks that left me in tears of frustration. There were a few things that I originally said yes to, that I eventually had to turn down, and the guilt ate away at me. So this year, I’m going to take some time to actually weigh my options before saying yes, and make time to just enjoy an evening off with my husband. Ya know, sort of like an adult. Maybe.

3. Cut out the negative posts on social media

I’m not much for complaining and controversy, but I’ve noticed that a large percentage of my facebook friends are. This year, instead of getting all riled up at the latest political scandal dividing the masses, or getting upset when I see someone trying to use public shaming as an acceptable means of teaching someone else a lesson, I’m going to unfollow whoever posted it. By no means do I want to bury my head in the sand, or block out the realities of the world around me, but I do want to change the narrative of my social media intake. I can get the news story from a news outlet – not from the 5 negative Nancy’s who only ever spew hate and disgust. I don’t need the story any more filtered than it already is. I’d rather let the people who have a helpful and positive attitude fill up my newsfeed.
