5 Things God Is Trying To Teach You Through Your Suffering

I am usually the type to deflect painful situations with humor, but God reminded me the other day that there is another, healthier way of dealing with trials: walking through them, with His strength, and the support of my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

2. God is bigger than our problems, and His peace is bigger than our pain.

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Psalm 16:7-8

This may seem like Sunday School 101, but when your only options are 1) giving up all hope and staying in bed all day under a pile of blankets, or 2) trusting that God will provide the strength for you to not only function, but to bring glory to Him throughout the day, you begin to understand what it means to trust that God is good. He has to be. And because of His goodness, pain and suffering are not reasons to abandon God, but rather they give new contexts in which to praise Him.

3. God’s Word is the unshakeable rock amidst the storms of this life.

Your Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105

Even though waves of anxiety wake me up in the middle of the night, God is good. His promises sustain me in the sleepless hours of the early morning, and in the middle of work day when the tears are only barely being held back. How do we proceed when the path ahead is dark? One step, one day, one prayer at a time. We move forward with confidence, because He has proven more than capable of handling every situation.
